People often overlook the diversity of Georgia. The state is home to a variety of racial, ethnic, and religious groups, including Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos, Asians, and major religious denominations. Despite having strong roots in Southern culture, many major cities in Georgia have grown to become increasingly multicultural in recent years. There is also a thriving art and music scene throughout the state, with popular music styles such as hip-hop, blues, jazz, and country. Despite its reputation as a traditionally “red” state in terms of politics, Georgia has become increasingly progressive in terms of social issues and has elected several Democratic mayors in recent years. More surprisingly, Georgia has also become a leader in environmental stewardship, with several green initiatives in place throughout the state. Examples include Georgia becoming the leading producer of solar energy in the Southeast, creating a network of public transportation through the public transit authority MARTA, and advocating for the protection of endangered species and wetlands.
