Here and Gone is a gripping, wonderfully tense suspense thriller about a mother’s desperate fight to recover her stolen children from corrupt authorities.

It begins with a woman fleeing through Arizona with her kids in tow, trying to escape an abusive marriage. When she’s pulled over by an unsettling local sheriff, things soon go awry and she is taken into custody. Only when she gets to the station, her kids are gone. And then the cops start saying they never saw any kids with her, that if they’re gone than she must have done something with them…

Meanwhile, halfway across the country a man hears the frenzied news reports about the missing kids, which are eerily similar to events in his own past. As the clock ticks down on the search for the lost children, he too is drawn into the desperate fight for their return.

Haylen Beck’s Here and Gone is one wild ride full of action-packed drama! It is bone-chilling and unnerving from the very beginning until the very end. The story begins with Audra Kinney leaving New York with her two children to stay with a friend on the West Coast; fleeing from her abusive and mentally disturbed husband. Audra is almost at her destination when she is pulled over in Arizona for a traffic violation and taken into custody after a scuffle with the local sheriff. When Audra arrives at the station, she demands to know where her children are. It isn’t until the local police inform her that they never saw her traveling with kids that a media frenzy in this small town in Arizona begins to devour nationwide coverage. I can’t really divulge more into the plot for Here and Gone because it is a quick, binge-worthy read, that will only take you a couple of hours to digest. It is a countdown to find Audra’s children and a battle against the clock.

Here and Gone was a pleasant surprise for me, as I have been in a slump with mystery thrillers lately (if you’ve seen some of my latest reviews). I was apprehensive picking this one up but I am glad I did. Here and Gone ‘s plot was predictable, but nevertheless juicy! It reminded me of an episode of Law and Order: SVU and I believe that if you’re looking for a quick read, this is your book. If you’re an avid thriller reader, this story might be a little unsurprising for you, but it will definitely hold your attention.

*Disclaimer: The subject matter of this book is highly controversial and dark. If you cannot stomach watching shows like Law and Order: SVU or Taken – I highly suggest you give this book to a friend who may be interested instead.
