I am SO excited to bring you today’s cover reveal! Last year Emily Carpenter blew me away with her debut Burying the Honeysuckle Girls while hooking me as a fan for life. If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading it yet, she’s graciously offering 1 paperback copy as a giveaway HERE (sorry US only!). Below is a little post Emily wrote giving us some info about her NEW book coming June 2017 titled “The Weight of Lies” and boy does it look positively stunning! This one has gone straight to my GIMMIE GIMMIE shelf on Goodreads and is available for pre-order via Amazon already. Now, on with the reveal post!
THE WEIGHT OF LIES
In this gripping, atmospheric family drama, a young woman investigates the forty -year -old murder that inspired her mother’s bestselling novel, and uncovers devastating truths—and dangerous lies.
Reformed party girl Meg Ashley leads a life of a privilege, thanks to a bestselling horror novel her mother wrote decades ago. But Meg knows that the glow of their very public life hides a darker reality of lies, manipulation, and the heartbreak of her own solitary childhood. Desperate to break free of her mother, Meg accepts a proposal to write a scandalous, tell-all memoir.
Digging into the past—and her mother’s cult classic—draws Meg to Bonny Island, Georgia and an unusual woman said to be the inspiration for the book. At first, island life seems idyllic, but as Meg starts to ask tough questions, disturbing revelations come to light…including some about her mother.
Soon, Meg’s search leads her to question the facts of a decades-old murder. She’s warned to leave it alone, but as the lies pile up, Meg knows she’s getting close to finding a murderer. When her own life is threatened, Meg realizes the darkness found in her mother’s book is nothing compared to the chilling truth that lurks off the page.
I am over the moon / beyond thrilled / utterly SLAIN with exhilaration to be able to parade my new book in front of you all.
(Then scoot over here to pre-order, if the spirit moves.)
I am a person who swoons over book covers. A fabulous cover can compel me to buy a book I know very little about otherwise. It probably has something to do with the fact that capital A Art—graphic, commercial, fine—is something I have zero ability to do. I am massively impressed by people who do it so well. So the artistry of book covers floors me. And this deliciously spooky cover? When I saw it and realized it was going mine mine mine mine all mine—deep breath, Emily—that just made it doubly swoon-worthy.
Some behind the scenes info: The amazing Rex Bonomelli designed it. The team at Lake Union, headed by my fantastic editor Kelli Martin, oversaw the whole process and production. I couldn’t be happier – not even if you locked me in room full of semi-sweet, dark chocolate with almonds and then threw in a year of free Netflix and some stretched-out yoga pants. All the glory goes to them, y’all. Tons and tons of glory.
THE WEIGHT OF LIES is my second book, and I had such a good time writing it. It’s suspense with a touch of Southern Gothic, a soupçon of horror, a smidge of romance, and the whole thing is threaded through with some good old-fashioned FAMILY MESS. Worse than what you’re about to experience at Thanksgiving, I promise. Way worse.
Like Althea, the main character in Burying the Honeysuckle Girls, Meg Ashley has a verrry complicated past and a burning desire to figure out who she really is apart from her mother. Meg has always been in the shadow of her mega-successful mom, but she’s only rebelled in fits and starts, so when the book opens, she’s ready to do something drastic. One thing I really like about Meg is that, even though she’s filled with doubts, even though she could stand to lose everything, she is still determined to go after the truth. She is one courageous woman.
I hope you guys end up rooting for her as much as I did. (Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving.)
