A chilling psychological thriller about a woman caught between two men…
Mari Gill wakes to horror in a strange apartment next to a murdered man, and can’t remember the night before. Accused of murder, she feels torn between her husband, a successful defense attorney, and a mysterious, kind man who wants to help. Can she trust either of them – or even her friends? Detective Kerri Blasco battles her police bosses believing Mari is innocent…but is she?
Another fabulous entry in the Kerri Blasco series from author J.A. Schneider! I really enjoyed Fear Dreams earlier this year and was so happy when I found out it was the beginning of a new detective series. These are quick and easy reads; the perfect type to blow you out of that reading slump! Three cheers for a series that manages to straddle the real and paranormal so flawlessly. These books are short but really pack a punch in terms of tension and pacing; Schneider is 2-0 for the series and I cannot wait for another book already!
Her Last Breath is very similar in structure and pacing to her previous novel Fear Dreams; here we once again have a female with the loss or no memory of a horrific incident and we, along with the main character and detectives, are trying to piece together what’s happened. The author does an honorable job of making us question each character’s motives and, in return, we trust no one. You can truly feel the building tension and paranoia that Mari experiences; my stomach would start tightening with each scene that she experienced some form of escalating and tormenting terror.
I really want to hold off on saying too much, as this book is a fun one to experience as you go; I hope you are as surprised with the ending as I was. I could see growth in the author’s writing between books 1-2 and admire how much passion she writes with. It is evident immediately in both books that she cares a great deal for her characters and I cannot wait to see who she continues to shape Kerri Blasco into. If you have been on the fence about starting this series, please go ahead and pick both of these books up (I think each one come in at around or just under 250 pages). It’s not a huge investment of time and both books are priced at an affordable $2.99 on Amazon Kindle at the time of this writing. I think you’ll discover you’ve found a new, exciting series to follow!
*Many thanks to the author (and dear friend) Joyce for my copy in exchange for an honest review. I look forward to continuing Kerri Blasco’s journey with you!
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
J.A. (Joyce Anne) Schneider is a former staffer at Newsweek Magazine, a wife, mom, and reading addict. She loves thrillers…which may seem odd, since she was once a major in French Literature – wonderful but sometimes heavy stuff. Now, for years, she has become increasingly fascinated with medicine, forensic science, and police procedure. Decades of being married to a physician who loves explaining medical concepts and reliving his experiences means there’ll often be medical angles even in “regular” thrillers that she writes. She lives with her family in Connecticut, USA.
